Kay Cowden Medlin was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on June 12, 1953. She attended Louisiana State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1974 and a Juris Doctor in 1977. She was a member of the Order of the Coif, Phi Kappa Phi, and Delta Theta Phi. Kay served as articles editor of the Louisiana Law Review from 1976 to 1977.

She is a member of the Shreveport Bar Association (secretary treasurer, 1980), Louisiana State Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Federal Energy Bar Association. Ms. Medlin also served as a member of the Louisiana Mineral Law Institute from 1984 to 1987 and from 1991 to 1994. From 1989 to 1992 she served as vice president and general counsel of Arkla Energy Marketing, Inc. and general counsel of Louisiana Intrastate Gas Company. Ms. Medlin is an approved mediator and arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association Energy Panel. Her practice areas include natural resources and public utility law, commercial litigation, and mediation.

Ms. Medlin is listed in The Best Lawyers in America® for areas in commercial litigation and energy law from 2009 - 2012 and Mediation in 2012.  Best Lawyers named Ms. Medlin as  "Shreveport Best Lawyers Energy Law Lawyer of the Year"’ for 2012.
